PARISH NOTICES for the week beginning
21st/22nd December 2019 - 4th Sunday of Advent, Year A

On this fourth Sunday of Advent we hear the joyful prayer of Mary who acknowledges the great things that God has done for her.

At Christmas we acknowledge the great things that God has done for us by sending his Son into the world.

A great deal has come to be associated with the feast of Christmas.

However, at the heart of the feast is the acknowledgment of the gift that God has given us in his Son.  We acknowledge that gift and we give thanks for it.

Christmas is the celebration of God’s greatness and generosity.

Mary’s prayer suggests that it is above all the lowly and the hungry who are will experience God’s greatness and generosity.

This is the news that Christmas brings: that a child who comes into the world, however unconnected, however poor and insignificant, however unheralded is the son or daughter of God.

This child at Christmas invites a new way of seeing, a new way of living. It is called simplicity, integrity, less distractions and more presence to life lived, moments appreciated, friends prized and loved ones blessed.

It is called “to go home by a different route.”

This Week’s   Readings.

CHRISTMAS MINISTRIES APPEAL Dear Parishioners, volunteers are once again needed to cover all Ministries during the Christmas Masses. These are for Eucharistic Ministers, Readers of the Word, and Crib Builders. Please sign up on the sheets in the porch. Thank you.

CHRISTMAS EVE CHILDRENS MASS 18.00  It would be lovely to see the children dressed as Nativity characters….angels, shepherds, animals, wise men…..and whatever else seems appropriate. So, bring out the angel wings and tea towels!

CHRISTMAS STARS Once again we will be doing our Christmas Stars. Last year there were 61 stars which raised an amazing £635, and also decorated the altar walls beautifully!  To briefly explain for those unfamiliar with the stars, the idea  is that, instead of sending Christmas cards to all your friends in the parish, you just write a message on a star, (available in the porch from the beginning of December) decorate it if you wish, and put it on the wall around the altar. Hopefully we can have a wonderful display of bright stars again. Then, think of the money you have saved on cards and stamps, and time and effort writing and delivering them, and give a donation to charity.  There will be a box  for your donation in the porch , or you can give it to Barbara McWalter at 11.15 Mass or to Sarah in the office. The charity this year will again be Fr Liam’s charity W.O.R.K. (Widows and Orphans of Rural     Kenya ). Thank you in advance for your usual generosity for this very worthy cause.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS The collection at all Masses on Christmas Day are designated for Fr Liam and make up a substantial part of his yearly income. It is possible to Gift Aid these donations for the benefit of the Parish; please take a Gift Aid form from the church lobby and enclose it with your donation or mark the donation with your gift aid number. Cheques payable to the Parish, please, as these gifts have to go through the Parish accounts but will be paid in full to Fr Liam. If you are not around at Christmas and you want to share in this, you can bring your gift beforehand to the office, or put it in the post box (envelopes marked Christmas are in the porch too). Thank you!

PARISH OFFICE CLOSED from the 20th December to the 6th of January. E-mails will be answered, if urgent, on the 23rd December, 27th of December and the 3rd of January.  Fr Liam will be available during the whole Christmas and New Year period.

SCHOOL ADMISSIONS CONSULTATION The governors of St Edmund Campion School are consulting on a change to admissions for children who wish to be admitted to school in September 2021.

Currently siblings of children already in the school are admitted under category 2 in our over subscription criteria. From September 2021 siblings who attend Mass weekly or monthly will be higher on the over subscription criteria than non-practising..

The changes in brief will be: practising weekly Category 2, practising monthly Category 4 and non-practising siblings will move to category 6.

The consultation will run for a period of 6 weeks from 13th December 2019  until  24th January 2020.  Copies of the proposed arrangements can be obtained from the school office  or can be downloaded from the school website .

Comments on the arrangements should be sent to the clerk to the governing body by  31st January 2020

May you have the Gift of Faith, The Blessing of Hope and The Peace of His Love, At Christmas and always.

Special Needs Corner At 6pm on a Friday once a month, we create a special space in the church and in the parish centre to welcome those amongst us with special needs, their families, carers and friends. On Friday 20th December, we shared a time of friendship around some Christmas nibbles, after having first gathered in front of the nativity scene, played with our drums and maracas the Little Drummer Boy carol and shared with one another origami peace cranes as a symbol of the peace Jesus brings to us at Christmas. Jesus comes to “guide us into the way of peace” (Luke 1, 79).
