St. Edmund Campion Pilgrimage

Day 4 - Sunday 11th October

Slough Retail Park (SL1 4DX) to Toby Carvery, Langley (SL3 8PS)

Mostly flat urban route. 4.3 miles approx. 1 hour 45 mins

Your walk today will take you along the Bath Road to the Toby Carvery at Langley which is just before the M4 Motorway. The walk is comparatively easy, a straight line between the two points

On leaving the retail park, turn to your left along the Bath Road towards Slough.

B&Q at Slough Retail Park

At the first set of traffic lights you meet you will have a Mercedes dealership on your right, this is the junction of Cippenham Lane and Dover Road. Continue across the traffic crossing bearing to your left, in order to walk along the service road that runs outside several office blocks including Regus and Telefonica. Continue walking along the service road, passing a Jet Petrol Station which lies between the service road and the main A4 Bath Road. Shortly after this you will a meet a blue hoarding which will take you off the service road to re-join the main A4.

Continue walking along the A4 and you will eventually reach SMC, a Ford main dealer; almost immediately you will pass the Three Tuns Public House and a major road crossing. Cross over this junction and continue walking towards Slough, passing the Windmill Care Centre on your left and coming shortly to the first entrance of Salt Hill Park. Passing a parade of shops and offices you will come to the main entrance of Salt Hill Park on your left, after which you will come to a main set of traffic lights controlling traffic from Stoke Poges Lane on your left.

Continue to walk along the Bath Road until you reach a main junction with traffic lights and cross straight over, passing the railway station entrance on your left. At this point you will see St Ethelbert’s Church on your right (Sunday Mass 9.00am, 11.00am & 6.30pm).

St Ethelbert’s Church Slough

Continue walking along the A4, passing the entrance of a large Tesco supermarket and petrol station, (possible toilet break), until you reach a roundabout. Walking to your left, continue straight on along the A4, crossing the Wexham Road. After a short distance you will come to another major road junction with traffic lights, on the far side of the road you will see a large Sainsbury Supermarket. Cross the road keeping to the A4 (Sainsbury Supermarket has good toilet facilities). Before long you will come across the Langley Road which has traffic lights and is on your left as you cross it. On the corner of the Langley Road is St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School.

Stained glass window

(These two windows which may be found in the Chapel at St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School depict St Edmund Campion.

In the background of the window on the right you can clearly see St Ethelbert’s church and Windsor Castle and the window on the left depicts St Edmund Campion being shackled to the horse at the Ostrich Inn Colnbrook where he and his guards had stayed at the night before making their way into London).

Continue walking along the A4 towards M4. On this stretch of the walk, you will pass a large guest house and small hotel before passing a Shell Garage on your left (this garage has toilet facilities). As you continue to walk, you will also notice Langley Fire Station on the other side of the road. Before long you will come to Kedminster Park on your left (the footpath here is a little uneven). Your next point is the High Street Langley which has traffic lights before you reach the Toby Carvery and the end of this stretch of the pilgrimage walk.

If you've seen one Toby Carvery..

The car park at the Toby Carvery is a good pick up point and will be start of the next stage of the pilgrimage. You cannot enter this car park from the M4 exit road: to enter you need to turn right at the traffic lights down Langley High Street, taking the first opportunity to turn round back towards the A4 at which point, turn to your left and the entrance to the Toby car park is immediately on your left.
