McDondalds, Mondial Way Heathrow (UB3 5AR) to OYO Osterley Park Hotel, Great West Road (TW7 5NA)
Flat urban route. 4.9 miles approx. 2 hours
This stretch of the Pilgrimage Walk is the most straight forward with few turns and all on the flat.
Turn left as you leave McDonalds and continue to follow the Bath Road. You will pass several large hotels including the Radisson Edwardian and the Sheraton Skyline.
As you continue on the Bath Road you will come to a major crossing with traffic lights, cross over and pass the Airport Bowl and Hotel Ibis. As you continue your walk you will cross a small river before reaching the distinctive DoubleTree Hilton Hotel which has a cluster of shops around it.
Continue walking along the Bath Road A4 to the large major roundabout called the Jolly Waggoners. This roundabout is a very busy junction where The Parkway (A312) crosses the Bath Road. Go down the ramp and turn right into the underpass. Turn left and follow the ramp up the side of the roundabout until you reach the pelican crossing. Now cross both carriageways and continue down the Bath Road.
Continue to walk along the Bath Road when you will come to another large roundabout, called the Henlys Roundabout. As you approach the roundabout there is a large McDonald’s that has toilet facilities. Turn left, cross the A4 at the zebra crossing and turn immediately right; the large BP Petrol Station also serves food and has facilities. As you walk round the roundabout, cross Burns Way and you will pass a small parade of shops bearing to your left.
You will now join the Great West Road. Continue to walk along the Great West Road on your right-hand side, heading east - you will pass a large Texaco Garage on your right.
As you walk along the Great West Road towards Osterley you will pass private housing, a few blocks of flats and small parades of shops until eventually you will come to Osterley Piccadilly Underground Station. Pass the station on your left, continue walking along the Great West Road crossing over Thornbury Road that has traffic lights until you arrive at the OYO Osterley Park Hotel. The hotel is on the corner of Wood Lane and concludes this stage of the walk.
Whilst the OYO charge is £6.00 a day to park, you should be able to pick up from here and drop off without incurring a cost.
If you are picking up or dropping off, you may wish to turn down Thornbury Road and visit Osterley Park and Gardens owned by the National Trust. You can book and park there for £7.00 for the day.
This area in West London has strong connections with Catholic martyrs. One of them, John Haile, a parish priest in Isleworth before the reformation, was the first secular priest to be martyred along with Richard Reynolds, a monk from Syon Abbey.
